maxbranigan Sounds like the audio hallucinations you would experience as you were being assimilated by the Borg, but like, in a good way that makes you excited to be a Borg. Bristling solar kissed swells punching into brutal electronic rhythms. Favorite track: Purge Puritan Purge.

about

“Deep swirling reverberations follow you through hazy clouds as the temperamental sputters of a synth whine in the distance. Grimy guitars screech with feedback while a jackhammer massages your brain. You are finding and losing the thread.”

“Notes From a Heavenly Soup” is James Gentile’s debut collection of music and soundscapes. These compositions emerged amid a profound period of isolation brought about by the convergence of the pandemic and a move to a different state. This significant change hastened a form of a quarter-life crisis, prompting a deep exploration of their inherited perceptions of identity and the concepts of community, belonging, and interconnectedness.

Striving to shift away from ingrained perfectionism, Gentile’s path to self-acceptance unveiled their nonbinary identity. During this journey, they created music that delved into expansive possibilities rather than adhering to established genres. Learning how to use synthesizers to create sounds from scratch and manipulating recorded audio with software allowed Gentile to sonically shape-shift, no longer feeling confined to the rules or expectations of their musical training. There is room for intentional making and happy accidents.

This post-genre “mixtape” documents experiments of transformation and play felt from the cellular to the celestial realms. It has assisted Gentile in dispelling anxiety about conforming and, instead, embracing existing gray areas.
