Consortium Works: Solo Saxophone features five new solo saxophone works by young Canadian and American composers. Each piece was commissioned as part of a 2018 consortium project, co-led by performer Samantha Etchegary and composer Andrew Noseworthy.

This commissioning consortium ran between 2018-2020 and connected an international community of 46 young and emerging players through the contribution of brand-new pieces to the instrument’s underdeveloped repertoire. The resulting music captured here presents a diverse and dynamic set of new works by the five composers involved, each representing different locational and identity backgrounds.

Four types of the saxophone are intricately showcased across these recordings, from the baritone to the soprano sax, while the range of sounds and styles highlight everything from interactions with electronics (Andrew Noseworthy and Andrew Koss), rhythmic interplay and grooves (Anna Meadors and Shelley Washington) and open-score game pieces (James Lowrie). Meadors, Koss and Washington, the album’s three American composers, are also accomplished saxophonists in their own right.

For this premiere studio recording, multiple members from the consortium project makeup the album’s performers, including Robert Hess (“Gray Stone, Green Garden), Greg Bruce, (“Pull Up”) and Jeffrey Leung (“BLACK MARY”). Andrew Koss performs his own work, while James Lowrie’s piece, “Quick Time Event: NEXT” is represented by two different live versions by Jeffrey Leung and Clay Steiner.
