For those seeking unexplored dark and spectral planes comes Ghost Songs, the new EP from Canadian composer Bekah Simms. Simms is a multi-time JUNO and recent Gaudeamus Prize Nominee for her newest piece with Crash Ensemble. Ghost Songs collects 4 integrated works by the composer that span a five year development of combining haunting electronics with the avant-garde treatment of solo acoustic instruments.

The first three tracks on Ghost Songs comprise the composer’s initial three “Skinscape” pieces. Each work examines the interaction between the soloist and an electronically disembodied version of themself. Distorted, granular and glitchy electronic soundscapes are melded into dialogue with the live performer, whose called-upon extended playing techniques blur the piece’s acoustic and electronic dimensions. This sense of spectral disembodiment is concluded by the EP’s final track, “Jubilant Phantoms”: an acousmatic piece constructed from fragments of rich accordion gestures and ghostly electronic drones. The piece is further accompanied by the brilliant visuals of multimedia artist Phong Tran
