about

"Relaxing Piano Music on the Bad Piano" is the first album release by mediumcore, the musical partnership between Canadian composer James Lowrie and the mysterious pianist known only as piña. It was recorded in pina’s apartment on their out-of-tune, broken-down upright piano, and exists as a relaxing piano playlist for musical freaks and weirdos of all kinds.

"Relaxing Piano Music on The Bad Piano" grew out of James’s obsession with the popularity of relaxing piano playlists on Spotify and YouTube. The album is filled with musical references to Yann Tiersen , Einaudi, Phillip Glass, Mozart, Morton Feldman, Tatsuro Yamashita and, for some reason, Eiffel 65. The “badness” of the piano with its unintended microtones, creaks, and groans offers a unique context where elements belonging to the experimental and contemporary classical music traditions are folded into relaxing piano music. This includes dissonant harmonies, complex rhythms, aleatoric sections. The overall effect, however, is nothing less than perfectly...relaxing.

This project was composed, workshopped, and recorded during the first year of the COVID pandemic. Since both members of mediumcore are disabled artists and significantly immunocompromised, any music projects had to be undertaken in the safety of their Toronto apartments. Writing music that creates a relaxing atmosphere out of a less-than-ideal instrument thus exemplifies the interplay between disability and social conditions typical of crip art: we can’t leave the house, we can’t afford a better piano
– let’s explore the sonic possibilities that remain.
