about

Lamniformes, the solo songwriting project created by Brooklyn-based musician Ian Cory, serves as a sonic manifestation of the anxious ruminations in its creator's mind. The project has taken on different life forms, spanning post-rock to hardcore and exploring themes ranging from self-hatred to The Myth of Sisyphus. Lamniformes' second full-length record, The Lonely Atom, is an incisive, mesmerizingly catchy heavy alternative rock album about the isolation of modern life, the fractured projections of the self that exist in digitally mediated spaces, and the universally-felt desperation for real connection in an increasingly atomized world.

The Lonely Atom's concept came to Cory through a series of eerie experiences that made him consider how humans connect with one another, and the bizarre and often insidious ways modern technology has distorted one of our most fundamental needs.

The album’s central theme was also born from a pair of chilling occurrences, the first while scrolling through Facebook and discovering that an acquaintance he had interacted with online for a decade had died. This inspired the poppy yet gravely heavy song "In Case You Missed It," which features his Bellows bandmate Montana Elliot as well as Boston musician Emily Reo on backing vocals. Not long after recording her part, Elliot's sudden and unexpected passing sent a wave of grief through Cory’s inner circle of friends and fellow musicians. She’d left behind a chilling, disembodied reminder of the very dread that inspired the song -- forever immortalized in a voice that no longer exists in the real world. The Lonely Atom is dedicated to her.

Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and considering the album's themes of overcoming isolation, the project’s recording became a group effort, with various friends and local musicians recording their own parts for later assemblage. “The Lonely Atom” features notable contributions from producer Jack Greenleaf (Sharpless/Bellows/Gabby’s World), guitarist Siddhu Anadalingham (Gatherers/Semaphore), guitarist AJ Santillan (Massa Nera/this place is actually the worst), bassist/keyboardist Frank Meadows (Fust/Bellows), and drummer Seth Engel (Options/Nnamdi/ Water From Your Eyes).
